Module 2: Mayan Back Strap Weaving With Trama Textiles of Guatemala
In Module 2, participants will learn the art of Mayan backstrap weaving, a centuries-old practice rooted in Indigenous traditions of Guatemala. Led by Trama Textiles, a women’s weaving cooperative dedicated to preserving and sharing this cultural heritage, this module introduces participants to the techniques, rhythms, and cultural significance of backstrap weaving. Through hands-on instruction, participants will explore how this portable and sustainable weaving method connects makers to the land, their bodies, and ancestral knowledge. This immersive experience celebrates both the artistry and resilience of Mayan weaving traditions while empowering participants to carry forward this legacy with skill and intention.
